손우정(b.1986)은 그림을 그리는 행위를 통해 자신이 꿈꿔왔던 상상과 자유 속으로 감상자를 초대한다. 그에게 회화란 유토피아에 도달하려는 시도로, 순수한 자유의 상태를 향한 갈망이다.
유토피아로 명명된 자유로운 상상의 세계는 그 누구의 방해도 받지 않는 순수의 공간으로 존재한다. 그래서 손우정은 지키고 싶은 소중한 기억들을 유토피아 곳곳에 투영해 은은하게 말을 건넨다. 그러나 투영된 이미지가 감상에 개입하는 것은 아니다. 손우정은 주제부에 비해 배경의 묘사를 단순화해 새로운 개념의 여백을 탄생시킨다. 치열하게 구성된 화면 덕분에 감상자는 자유롭게 공간을 상상하며 작품과 함께 호흡할 수 있다.
“상상의 한계는 없다. 또한, 내가 상상하고 믿는다면 그것이 바로 현실이다.”
그의 작품에 주로 등장하는 메타포인 백호는 이별한 반려묘를 의미한다. 그러나 백호의 형상이 오직 손우정만의 이야기를 담는 것은 아니다. 누구나 자신만의 백호 즉, 그리움의 대상이 존재하기 때문에 그가 제시하는 유토피아 속에서 꿈꾸던 재회의 순간을 맞이할 수 있는 것이다. 따라서 손우정의 회화는 치졸한 욕망이 아닌, 소망과 희망의 이미지를 가시화하는 작업이자 세월에 가려진 동심으로의 회귀다.
상상으로 가득 찬 그의 예술 세계는 이제 또 무엇을 담아낼까. 그리고 우리는 그것을 통해 어떤 방식으로 내면의 순수와 마주할 수 있을까. 손우정의 회화는 때묻지 않은 시절을 향한 그리움이자 잊혀진 순수함을 되찾으려는 행위다.

Son Woo Jung (b.1986) invites viewers into the imagination and freedom she dreamed of through the act of painting. For the artist, painting is an attempt to reach utopia, a longing for an unadulterated state of freedom.
The unconstrained fictitious planet known as Utopia, exists in pure space without interference from anyone. So, Son Woo Jung softly offers conversation while projecting the adored memories she wants to keep throughout Utopia. However, the projected image does not interfere with appreciation. Son Woo Jung simplifies the description of the background compared to the subject part, creating a new concept of margin. Thanks to the intensely constructed screen, the viewer can freely visualize the space and breathe with the piece.
"There is no limit to imagination. If I imagine and believe it, that is the reality."
White Tiger, a metaphor that usually appears in the work, represents her lost cat. However, Son Woo Jung's story is not the only one contained in the white tiger's shape. As everyone has their own white tiger, an object of longing, they can all confront the moment of their ideal reunion in the utopia she describes Son Woo Jung's artwork thus represents an image of hope and a return to childhood that has been concealed by time rather than a crude desire.
What else could her imaginative universe include. And how might it help us confront our inner purity. Son Woo Jung's artwork embodies a longing for untouched times and a restoration of lost innocence.
