우리는 매일 수많은 만남과 이별을 반복하며 살아간다. 무수한 반복 속에 축적된 얼굴들은 왜곡된 기억으로 남아 눈으로 담아낼 수 없고, 언어로 표현할 수도 없는 모호한 이미지로 재탄생된다. 그래서 기억은 명확한 이미지를 불러일으키지 않는다. 그저 대상을 마주한 순간 느꼈던 자신의 감정을 복기하게 만들 뿐이다. 이렇듯 이용현의 예술 세계는 기억으로 명명된 감정의 복기에서부터 출발한다.
“누군가의 눈을 지긋이 바라보면 그의 형상이 희미하게 일렁이기 시작하듯 나는 언젠가부터 대상을 바라보고 있음에도 보이지 않는 무언가를 갈구하는 듯한 감정을 느꼈다.”
모호하게 일렁이는 이용현의 조소는 감정이라는 이름의 실체 없는 잔상을 형상화하는 과정이다. 그러나 이러한 형상이 모두 내가 아닌 특정한 누군가를 지칭하는 것은 아니다. 타인과 눈을 맞춘다는 것은 결국 그 사람의 눈동자 속에 비친 자기 자신을 마주하는 행위이므로, 확장된 관점에서 바라본 이용현의 갈망은 타인에 의해 마주할 수밖에 없는 자기 자신을 향한 그리움으로도 해석된다.
우리는 시선을 밖으로만 돌리기 때문에 흐릿한 기억 속에서 자기 자신을 떠올리는 일은 결코 쉽지 않다. 그러나 이용현의 조소는 발산되던 시선을 반사해 결국 자신을 들여다보게 만든다. 따라서 ‘보이지 않는 무언가를 향한 갈구’는 우리 모두에게 내재되어 있던 그리움의 근원을 찾기 위한 그만의 시도다.

We live by repeating numerous encounters and farewells every day. The faces accumulated over innumerable repetitions remain distorted memories and are resurrected as ambiguous visions that cannot be described in language or seen with the eyes. Therefore, memory does not evoke a distinct image. It just makes you think back on how you felt the moment you faced the object. As such, Lee Yong Hyeon’s art world starts from the review of emotions named memory.
"When I looked into someone's eyes, I felt as if I was longing for something invisible even though I was looking at the object from some point on, just as the figure began to wobble faintly."
Lee Yong Hyeon's vague sculpture is the process of embodying an afterimage without substance named emotion. However, not all of these figures refer to someone specific. Making eye contact with another person is eventually an act of facing oneself, reflected in the person's eyes, so Lee Yong Hyeon's longing from an extended perspective is also interpreted as a longing for herself that is bound to be faced by others.
It's never easy to think of yourself in a hazy memory because we only look outward. However, Lee Yong Hyeon's sculpture reflects the gaze that was emitted and eventually makes us look into ourselves. Therefore, the 'desire for something invisible' is her own attempt to find the source of longing that is inherent in all of us.
