조은필, 최승윤 이채 3인전
FLOW, between change and steadiness
빛은 그 자체로 신의 현현이다. 빛과 색은 분리될 수 없기에 색 또한 신성함을 지닌다. 이러한 측면에서 파랑은 모든 피조물을 비추는 빛이자 내면의 충만을 일으키는 고요의 색으로 숭고함을 머금는다. 그렇다면 파랑이 지닌 숭고함이란 어디에서 비롯된 것인가. 하늘과 바다, 기쁨과 슬픔, 한낮과 한밤으로 흘러가는 파랑의 성질이 우주의 법칙과 닮아 있다는 사실에서부터일까.
<FLOW, between change and steadiness>는 영혼 깊은 곳에 자리 잡은 저마다의 사랑과 우수가 적막을 깨고 가시화되는 순간을 포착하기 위해 기획되었다. 갤러리X2는 이를 위해 조은필과 최승윤, 그리고 이채를 전시 작가로 선정했다.

Light is itself a manifestation of the divine. Since light and color are inseparable, color is also sacred. In this sense, blue is sublime as the light that illuminates all of creation and the color of tranquility that creates inner fulfillment.
Then, where does the sublime of blue come from? Is it from the fact that the sky and the sea, joy and sadness, and the nature of blue flowing into the middle of the day and night resemble the laws of the universe.
<FLOW, BETWEEN CHANGE AND STEADNESS> is designed to capture the moment when the love and melancholy that lies deep in the soul breaks through the silence and becomes visible. Gallery X2 selected CHO EUN-PHIL, CHOI SEUNG-YOON, and LEE CHAE as the artists for this exhibition.
조은필 CHO EUN-PHIL
조은필(b.1979)은 파란색을 이용해 현실을 초현실로 전환한다. 전환의 과정은 일상적 소재의 물리적 크기와 고유한 색상을 변환해 당연하다고 믿었던 세계의 붕괴를 촉진하는 형태로 전개된다. 그래서 조은필의 파랑은 관념에 대한 도전이다.
특정한 주제에 종속되지 않고 색 자체만으로 의미를 지니는 것. 그래서 조은필의 조형은 청색화(Creating blue/blueing)의 과정을 거친다. 즉, 보편적 인식을 전복시키는 형태의 작업을 통해 현실을 부정하고 현장성에 질문을 던지는 실험을 진행하는 것이다.
모든 것을 파란색으로 변환한다는 것은 관념에서의 해방과 동시에 새로운 강박의 세계로 진입함을 의미한다. 하지만 내가 보고 있는 세계가 환영일 수도 있다는 사실을 수긍한다면 집착은 곧 자유의 원동력이 될 것이다.

"BLUE, a challenge to ideas" - CHO EUN-PHIL
Cho Eun-Phil (b.1979) uses the color blue to transform reality into surreality. The process of transformation takes the form of transforming the physical size and unique color of everyday materials to promote the disintegration of the world we take for granted. Thus, Cho's blue is a challenge to convention.
Her sculptures go through the process of creating blue/blueing, which is to say, she conducts experiments that deny reality and question the immediacy of the world through a form of work that subverts universal perceptions.
Converting everything to blue means liberation from convention and entering a new world of obsession. But if I accept the fact that the world I am seeing may be an illusion, obsession will soon become a driving force for freedom.
최승윤 CHOI SEUNG-YOON
일반적으로 파랑은 차가운 상태를 내포한다. 그러나 파란 불꽃이 가장 뜨거운 빛이라는 사실을 알고 있는가. 그래서 최승윤(b.1984)의 파란색은 역설이다.
모든 생명에는 이면이 있다. 그래서 우리는 모순을 안고 살아간다. 최승윤의 회화는 이러한 모순과 역설을 그대로 떠안는 방식을 취한다. 가까이 다가가지 않고서는 이면에 어떤 모습이 도사리고 있는지 알아챌 수 없는 것처럼 비슷한 듯 미묘하게 다른 이미지는 각자만의 비밀을 지니고 있다.
거대한 파란 별 위의 우리는 각자의 직선을 향해 나아간다. 그 선이 교차하는 찰나의 순간, 광대한 우주 속에서 서로의 미세한 이면을 본다. 그래서 최승윤의 회화는 어디에나 있지만 어디에도 없는, 존재와 비존재 사이의 반半존재를 담아낸다.

"BLUE of paradoxes containing the laws of the universe" - CHOI SEUNG-YOON
The color blue is usually associated with coolness. But did you know that a blue flame is the hottest light? That's why Choi Seung-Yoon's (b.1984) blue is a paradox.
Every life has two sides. So we live with contradictions. Choi's paintings embrace these contradictions and paradoxes. Similar yet subtly different images have their own secrets, just as we cannot recognize what lies behind them unless we get closer.
On the giant blue star, we each move toward our own straight line. At the moment when the lines intersect, we see each other's microscopic side in the vastness of the universe. Thus, Choi's paintings capture the half-existence between existence and non-existence, being everywhere but nowhere.
이채 LEE CHAE
이채(b.1989)는 캔버스에 색을 입히고 닦아내는 과정을 반복하며 회화와 숨을 주고받는다. 그렇게 호흡이 맞닿은 자리마다 시간이 스며든다. 호흡한다는 것은 살아있다는 것, 그래서 이채의 파란색은 존재에 대한 질문을 담는다.
인상(감각)과 형상(실재), 잔상(기억)의 세 가지 요소로 구성된 이채의 회화는 감각과 실재가 여과된 후 걸러진 기억들을 그리움으로 명명한다. 지나간 것과 남겨진 것의 경계에서 그리움의 여과 장치가 된 캔버스는 거듭된 생성과 소멸이 만들어낸 실존적 고민으로 가득하다.
누구에게나 말 못할 그리움이 있다. 이채는 남겨진 결 사이의 틈을 메워 잔상이 시간과 물질을 머금게 만든다. 잔상이 그것들을 충분히 머금었을 때, 이채는 한 걸음 물러나 거리를 둔다. 그에게 거리 두기는 그리움의 작용. 저마다의 거리에서 바라보는 세계는 잔상으로 가득하다.

"BLUE revealed with questions about existence" - LEE CHAE
Lee Chae (b.1989) exchanges breath with her paintings by repeating the process of applying and wiping colors on the canvas. Time permeates each place where their breaths meet. To breathe is to be alive, so Lee's blue color contains the question of existence.
Lee's paintings, which are composed of three elements: impression (sensation), shape (reality), and afterimage (memory), name the memories that are filtered through sensation and reality as nostalgia. The canvas, which has become a filter for nostalgia at the boundary between what has passed and what is left behind, is filled with existential concerns created by repeated creation and destruction.
Everyone has an unspeakable longing. Lee fills in the gaps between the grains left behind, allowing the afterimages to soak up time and matter. When the afterimages have absorbed them sufficiently, Lee steps back and distances himself. For him, distancing is an act of longing. The world viewed from their respective distances is full of afterimages.
세 명의 작가는 파란색을 작업의 주요소로 사용하지만 이를 다루는 방식에 차이를 둔다. 그러나 한 가지 확실한 것은 이들에게 파란색이 유동적이고 가변적인 상태를 포함하고 있다는 사실이다.
흐르는 것은 움켜쥘 수 없기에 아름답다. 그래서 파란색은 아름다움을 간직한다. 아름다움은 곧 영혼의 풍요. 조은필, 최승윤, 이채의 파랑은 더욱 풍부해진 영靈의 소용돌이 속으로 우리를 내몬다.
흐르는 물결을 보며 바다를 떠올리듯, 우리는 정신의 요동을 통해 삶을 실감한다. 당신의 가장 얕은 곳부터 심연 밑바닥까지 흐르는 파랑을 통해 강렬한 영혼의 이끌림을 경험하길 바란다.

Although the three artists use blue as a mainstay of their work, they differ in the way they treat it, but one thing is certain: for them, blue contains a fluid and mutable state.
What flows is beautiful because it can't be grasped. That's why blue is beautiful. The blue of Cho Eunphil, Choi Seungyoon, and Lee Chae transports us into the vortex of a richer spirituality.
Just as the ocean reminds us of the flowing waves, we realize life through the turbulence of the spirit. I invite you to experience the intense pull of your soul through the flowing blue, from the shallowest part of you to the bottom of the abyss.
